After a hiatus of three weeks, due to the airwave-disrupting havoc we all know as the Gentse Feesten, Radio Pink Flamingo will be back at your disposal tonight (6 'till 7 pm CET, on 105.3 Urgent.fm). One of the newest swingin' acts you're sure to move your ass to during one of the coming episodes, is King Khan and the Shrines. This Canadian/Indian/Berliner soul rock combo, fronted by charismatic Kukamonga cult leader Arish 'King' Khan, sure know their classics: listening to the recently released 'The Supreme Genius of King Khan and the Shrines' (on Vice Records, which Khan used to write for too), you can almost literally smell the funky breath of various immortally cool acts like The Zombies, James Brown & the JB's and the aforementioned Otis Redding. All of that, ànd some funny, self-deprecating lyrics to top it off - which, of course, is nice.
And if the music still isn't enough to turn you over to the Khan side, then some of his lifestyle tips are sure to succeed: for instance, while on tour, Khan regularly incites the audience members into each burning one dollar, which subsequently turns into hundreds of bucks being publically squandered - great KLF-like stuff. Or, outside of his touring bus, he enjoys dressing up as a hobo and goes lying around on the streets of whatever town he happens to be in. As the King puts it:
"That's the secret of the whole Kukamonga Death Cult: I dress up like a homeless person wherever I tour, because it's anti-sexual. When I tour, I'm neither homosexual or heterosexual - I'm hobo-sexual. So that basically opens yourself up to anything at all - you could have sex with a piece of cheese and it would be totally natural."

Um, yeah, OK...
Anyway, just give 'Torture' a listen, the immensely exciting opening track off the album, and judge for thyselves!
